Chapter 16

They have been talking for nearly two hours when the steel gate opens, and the bus drives through. Brian closes the gate behind the bus, securing it with the lock. Then he nods at Cillian and Amira before going to his cabin. The door to the bus opens and there is singing coming from inside. Milán exits first, shaking his head and looks at Declan, “Tuve que decirles dos veces que mañana tenían trabajo, señor.”

Declan chuckles and says, “No pasa nada. Esto es lo que necesitaban esta noche. Hazlos bajar del autobús y mándalos a la cama.”

Amira cocks her head at him, “You make Spanish sound so beautiful.”

His cheeks flush, and he is glad that the fire masks it. They watch as, one by one, the students get off the bus and make their way to their cabins—albeit a little drunkenly. “That’s going to hurt in the morning.” He says and then to Milán, “Prepara el café extra fuerte mañana, Milan.”

“What did you say to him?” she asks when Milán gets back into the bus and drives it to the other end of the path, parking it.

Declan puts one more log onto the fire, “I told him to make the coffee extra strong tomorrow.” And then he chuckles. He settles back in his chair and stares at her, “Europeans like to think that French is the most beautiful language. Because of how it rolls off the tongue. It’s Spanish for me.”

The last of the cabin doors close, and they are once again bathed in silence with just the crackling fire. “Tell me something in Spanish.”

His eyes blaze orange as he looks into the fire, a small smile playing on his lips. Then he looks at her from the corner of his eye and says in a low yet sensual tone of voice, “Eres la mujer más hermosa que he visto en mi vida y me gustaría besarte.”

Amira doesn’t understand a single word, and yet she feels something warm stir inside her. It isn’t just what he has said; it’s the look of desire in his eyes. A look that she’s seen a few times since they arrived in this place. She is just about to ask him what it means when there is a sudden downpour of rain.

She gasps and jumps up. Declan grabs her hand, pulling her to her cabin, which is closest to the firepit. She opens the door, and they go inside; he closes it as the rain pounds the outside walls. He turns around and Amira has already brought towels out from her bathroom. She hands him one and uses one on her hair and face. When she finally looks up at him, he hasn’t moved an inch. He is still clutching the towel in his hand.

“Eres la mujer más hermosa que he visto en mi vida y me gustaría besarte.” He says again staring at her, fire in his eyes.

Her lips part, and she is momentarily stunned by how sexy the words sound. “What does it mean?” She whispers.
